I once traveled from Zagreb to Krk with some Croatian friends in their Yugo. Late in the afternoon, we watched a large sailboat of morose, sunburned, drunk Germans singing a melancholy song as they motored into the harbor.
My friend watched the spectacle and in a philosophical tone of voice told me that as a culture, Germans are industrious and disciplined enough to afford a big sailboat, but the same drive makes them unable to enjoy it without guilt. In contrast, he said, he as a Croatian was well equipped emotionally to enjoy the boat but lacked the drive and industriousness to one his own.
Loved this. Have a blast on your trip, I'm sure it will be amazing. If you get to like the western Balkan vibe, come back, but get behind those Dinaric Alps and come and explore my adopted home of Bosnia and Herzegovina, you wont be disappointed.
I loved this post in particular because you really captured the nuances of travel in Europe. Your experiences match my European travel experience to a "T." It was delightful to see Denise enjoying her travel!
Thanks for continuing to share your experiences. It's always nice to open your stories each week.
By the way, I went to Croatia last year (via car) and as soon as I crossed the border, my MEO phone didn't work - calls, texts, and data. It was soooo frustrating. I ended up buying a 30-day SIM card.
The data thing could be a setting on your phone. On Android it is Settings|Network & internet|SIMs|MEO|Roaming: Connect to data services when roaming needs to be on.
That's one good thing about the EU (along many other good things!): they banned mobile phone roaming charges when traveling within the EU. 🙂❤️
You are right...we are often amazed at how easy it is to live in Europe.

This is one of life’s great mysteries.
Great story! Thanks!!!

We were fortunate enough to spend three months over one winter in Split and loved it.
We, too, lived in Split for 3 months from November 2019 through end of January 2020 and loved it!
I really enjoyed this post. Love hearing of your travels.

Although I rarely comment, I do enjoy all your posts. Looking forward to your thoughts on this cruise. Oh, and tell Denise, love the dress!
I know Split is a city in Croatia, but I read that headline at first as "We landed in Croatia, took a look around and decided to get out of there."
No just a play on words
Wonderful descriptions. Thanks!

Meo tech support was able to sort it out with the famous “turn your phone off and on”
Great post! You’ve inspired me to visit Croatia one day soon. Side note: Love the dress in the last photo. Where is it from? 😊
Denise gets lots of compliments on her Freda dress.
