Great post. Thanks Nancy and thanks for the photos & video. I went for a hike near Guarda a few months ago with some friends, and we stopped in Monsanto on our way back towards Lisbon. It was a lovely town and we really like it. Thanks for the review on of Mérida. I can’t wait to see what you think of Cáceres. Maybe I’ll add them both to my ever expanding list of places to visit.
I was looking forward to getting some more info on the retirement home in Spain. I’m keeping an eye out because if I live long enough, I will probably be ending up in one in Portugal…or nearby, so I’m gathering information as it comes across my path. I’m hoping I’ll be able to find something that’s more affordable than the ones in the US🤦🏽.
Thank you for the tip on Mérida. We always travel with our dogs so we really appreciate having parking. Also, it helps to know we can do Monsanto in a day.
I was impressed by Merida - the "ruins" are spectacular. We usually stop at Caceres on the drive from UK to VRSA as they have an excellent campervan stop (with each plot having its own toilet and shower block) but found it difficult to get parked in the town itself which is lovely.
We love Merida. We visited back in 2021 and stayed in this apartment that was built over Roman ruins. It had thick glass floors allowing you to see the ruins. We are going on a road trip to the Puglia region of Italy next week and may include a stop in Merida on the way back.

Fascinating history about Merida, Spain. And I look forward to visiting Monsanto on one of our day trips. Thanks, Nancy!
looks like your summer is off to a great start!

Nice overview and photos. Now I want to go! Obrigado
We vote Merida! Much, much better than Caceres, on every possible level. Good choice, dear ladies!
Beautiful shots - and your new career as a travel writer sure seems to be taking off. :-) Thanks for sharing.
We loved both Merida and Caceres! Love seeing your pictures of Monsanto. I’ve been trying to make a day trip there for awhile now.

Thanks for the tip! We have friends traveling by campervan from Scotland. I passed along your recommendation,
If they need stops in France, I can recommend Vendome which is lovely and has a splendid moat and cathedral.

What a great apartment! Enjoy your trip!!!
I didn’t read anything about a retirement home 🤷🏼♀️
Augustus created the city of Mérida as a soldiers retirement homr.
A little bit of false advertising, but okay.
