Spent six weeks in Funchal in 2019. We purchased inexpensive grandstand seats at the tourist office to watch the Mardi Gras main parade. So glad we did. Loved our stay.
Thanks Nancy for the overview. Our new neighborhood is right next to an elementary school. The kids dressed up and marched around the neighborhood banging drums and playing music and throwing paper streamers. Ajah sent us a video of adult activities happening in her neck of the woods. We are headed out to see what kind of trouble we can get in.
Yes on Friday all the children were in costume in the square and musicians on stage were leading them in song and dance. Just lovely to see children being children...
Very interesting article on Carnival. I am curious as to why Denise would never live on another island...is it the feeling of remoteness? We have been considering Madeira when we make our move in a year or two, but worry it might feel remote and disconnected. Thanks for all the information and insight you provide!
Yes, she feel like once you see the island you must get on a plane to see anything. I have spoken to one couple that is returning to the mainland after 1 year...same feeling.

Thanks so much - loved this review of Carnival with succinct overview and delightful information.
You'll enjoy Madeira - there's plenty to see and do. And there's golfing at Santa do Serra.
