Exploring the two Knights Templar sites in Castro Marim and Tomar were highlights of our last visit (from the US) in September. Highly recommend visiting both! I look forward to your posts - thank you for continuing to share your insights and experiences in your new home country!

Thank you for brightening this overcast morning in Serra da Estrela with a bit of history! Wondering where those Knights are today?:-).

I had not found a way in to this history of the Knights so your sharing here is a joyful discovery. Every stone in Portugal has a brilliant thrill under.

Thanks

Easy to see the standard pattern of Christians committing atrocities and heinous acts in the name of God (and mostly greed/power). Yet, heralded as "rich history" worthy of something other than what it is.

Enjoyed this post and the walk along the wall. Nothing like a visit to a museum of torture to wipe away any romanticizing notions. Yikes!

I was going to write more about what was inside, but frankly with what is going on in Ukraine I just couldn't. I am amazed by what one human being can conceive to torture another.

That sepia is really nice! Is that a filter? I also love that bit of history. It strikes me how different your surroundings are from where you came from in the US: very different history as well as a much longer history.

No it is not a filter...we were experiencing the impact of a huge Saharan dust storm that affected Spain, France and Portugal. I took our car to the car wash the next day and washed off nearly 1/2" of reddish-brown clay. https://english.alarabiya.net/life-style/2022/03/16/Huge-Saharan-dust-storm-covers-Spain-reaches-France-and-Portugal

I thought that's what it might be. We had a touch of that in Amsterdam, but nothing like that. It's otherworldly looking.

The beige skies really set off the natural beauty of the stone. I'm guessing this trip occurred during the desert sky phenomenon last week? I've yet to get out to explore my surroundings so thank you for sharing your outings. Every step is a step back in time.
