A bittersweet experience no doubt from the intrepid duo. Thanks for highlighting the human shadow aspect we must forever acknowledge and work to bring into the light.
Thank you, Nancy, for sharing your experiences at Terezín. Most people wouldn’t know that horrible history of the Jewish people, and that while Czecholovskia was occupied by Nazis, the country was not at war…277.000 of its citizens ( all Jews) were murdered.
Nancy, thanks for an eloquent post. Two things struck me as I read it. First, we usually see photos of empty rooms and can only imagine what happened there. But the artwork gave a glimpse into daily life in horrific conditions. Second, I think Netanyahu and his cronies would benefit from a visit to the camp, to remind them of what their people suffered through in WWII. Maybe then they could see the parallels to what they are doing to the Palestinians in Gaza.
Wishful thinking, I know. Somebody said "History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes." Sure does.
wow. This is why it is so important to remember what has happened in the past and to be active in voting here in the present. Sigh. Thank you for sharing.
Man's capacity for good. Man's capacity for evil. Again and again... "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Thank you Nancy for helping us to remember. Helping us to remember so that we might move towards the light. Thank you.
Nancy, you and Denise are true travelers, with a quest to learn and share knowledge. Most of us wish to see beauty and would turn away from the burning pain of human darkness. Thank you for your strength to see the truth in history and remind us what can happen.
Thank you for this story. Of course, I never heard of it in my history classes and your writing is so poignant. This made me cry to think what those poor people were subjected to — for nothing more than a label.
I am an old woman now and when I was young I thought when I was old we would have all grown smarter and thus kinder to recognize we are all human beings. Sadly, my dream was that of a child. I fear human beings will always seek to label other groups so they can feel superior. But we should never give up.
Thank you again for this story and may your journey continue to awe and educate.
Thank you for sharing. The words, "Such a tragedy" are so woefully inadequate. I'm sickened by the antisemitism that still exists today.
We shouldn't ever try to erase a part of history. I was completely unaware of Terezin. I typically research before visiting an area. I wonder if Terezin is listed in tour books as a must see when visiting Prague.
Thanks for highlighting this part of the Holocaust history. I can almost feel the suffering when visiting Holocaust Camps and Memorials. I always have an overwhelming feeling of melancholy that lasts for days. It is truly sad that it does not seem to be taught in history in schools nowadays. It is a pity that you did not get to visit the Sedlec Ossuary (Chapel of Bones) iin Kutna Hora whilst in Czech Republic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedlec_Ossuary
A useful reminder to many who may have forgotten and to those who weren't taught. It brought back to me memories of my German godfather who survived the concentration camps somehow. As I child I often wondered why he would have periods of great melancholy but British schools used to teach us about that dreadful history so I then understood. Do schools teach with illustrations the horrors anymore?
I don't know what is taught today. And in some states, like Florida, they are creating curriculums that "white wash" history (e.g. slavery was an opportunity to learn a trade)

How sad that we forget what happened, we must never forget, because man is stupid enough to let it happen again and cry I didn’t know.

No words... just a pit in the stomch.

Thank you Eric. I learned so much this summer! Things I somehow missed during my formal education process...but are so important.

We love the Czech Republic and will certainly be back...we will add your suggestion to our list.

I could weep for the future
Whew!! Not sure I could even go there. So horrible and hard to imagine.
We think everyone should visit. When Denise visited with neices and nephews years ago the “kids” were shocked and seem unaware. We should never forget
