The Apartment with A View is was a good 'miss'. The typical summer crowds ensure a lot of noise and revelers on that walkway at night, plus heavy car/motorcycle traffic--especially on Sunday afternoons, which means lots of exhaust fumes. The restaurants below you are full, busy, noisy and smelly. We have passed it up, too, as it's been on the market many times over our 10 years here, and remain happier elsewhere.
Susan, we walked by the realtor’s office yesterday and saw it was still available. I chalked it up to Covid but secretly pined for it. Your email made me feel much better. I hope when lockdown is lifted we can meet for a glass of wine. Clearly you are a wealth of knowledge,
Only you know if it was worth giving up a view. The first thing I look at when renting is location and view. I have not had the experience you have by renting for months. By the time we get there, you will probably have moved again.
In Portugal, there are many aspects of where you live that become more important than the view. I'm American, so I grew up believing that barking dogs, screaming children and neighbors loudly drinking in the street outside your door meant 'bad neighborhood'. In Portugal, unless you're in a rural area, it's common. And I mean really BARKING dogs, for hours and hours without respite; SCREAMING children, for hours at a high pitch. Our sensitivity to noise is different--and I lived in downtown Chicago, Boston, Washington DC and Manhattan, plus London. Portugal is so very different that noise, heat/insulation, electrical wiring and elevators rise to the top of the list with 'view' becoming one of the things you go outside of your home to easily enjoy!

Thanks for the different viewpoint!
