"I can’t pinpoint the exact month it happened…but I think it took about one year. My mindset started to change. First, I realised the value in experiencing a country without making comparisons."
I especially like this line, not only to have an idea when I might expect getting to this stage myself, but mostly because it's a very important thing to notice and fully appreciate, a fabulous goal to reach.
This is great, Nancy, thank you for your thoughts.
Being here 2 years as well your post tracks with my experience closely. My head is still spinning. I think 1 more year and I’ll feel even more settled. Thanks for your posts. I read everyone!
Thanks again, Nancy , for comforting me in my decision make my move to PT alone. Europe is fabulous , indeed. Born in Western part of USSR. I traveled to Poland, Germany, Denmark, France by a tourists bus. Wish you happy New Year and many more wonderful findings and adventures ahead.
I have been following you from the beginning and always look forward to your posts. While I’m not ready to live other than the USA (I re-think this frequently!), I plan on being a participatory and thoughtful/learning traveler and temporary resident now and when I retire.
My family and I (from Canada) are just marking month two, next door in Altura, and your posts have been a great source of comfort and reassurance as we navigate our new life - many thanks! (We have yet to try pickle ball but it’s now on our list!)

One of my favorite columns to date….and the pic of Cabo da Roca is a killer!👍
Was just writing up our own post about acclimating to life in Denmark. In a few years, we hope to be acclimating somewhere...warmer.
I enjoyed your perspective very much. A “progressive constitution”. Imagine! 🥰
Another great post at the right moment…

Good to know that even two years in we might still be a little off kilter. Thanks!
Love the mission statement, two old white women move to PT. Thanks y'all, from an American still in America. Cheers!

Your post is comforting to me as my husband and I hope to be in Portugal in fall 2023. Your clear-eyed perspective is refreshing.
Great read Nancy.
Sending love from Pakistan. <3
