The moral fabric, the fear of truth and the unravelling of democracy is so very concerning. Maybe the news we see from the US does not represent the will of most people but it is scary.

If I recall correctly in Portugal you get 20 years for murder. I believe it comes from the Portuguese understanding that everyone is able to repent for their sins and the belief that forgiveness is part of their Christian beliefs.

A Susquehanna University report found that, on average, across all 50 states, a death row inmate costs $1.12 million more than a general population inmate. In July 2018, there were 2,738 inmates on death row. That's almost $3 billion additional expense than if they had all been sentenced to life in prison instead.

A 2008 report issued in California stated that costs of the death penalty system were about $137 million per year, and that implementing reforms to ensure a fair process would cost $232.7 million per year. By contrast, the report found that a system in which life in prison was the maximum penalty would cost only $11.5 million per year.

If you are fiscally conservative, how does the death penalty make sense? No matter what political philosophy you ascribe to, how does killing someone change anything or bring about satisfaction?

great movie! Guilty!! I, like Denise, believe "some" people cannot be rehabilitated. I've watched documentaries on serial killers and I think the only remorse they have is they got caught. I wonder what the person is like that pushes the button or fires the trigger.

I agree Linda that sociopaths may be incapable of remorse. It I wonder if we show value for life when we condemn them to death.
