Hello Nancy, I am sending healing greeting to you. I like hearing about the festivals and glad for Denise, that she attended. I am a hiker. That’s what I do wherever I go. I can affirm that hiking is alive and very well in Portugal. My experiences so far is that the trails are well marked. I have spent my time on the coasts but plan to venture inland more soon. Love your post. Thanks
Most interesting post! Being a lover of hiking as well as someone who has had two extensive foot surgeries and soon will endure a third, I sympathize with your plight! Heal soon and retire the scooter and crutches when you can! Ugh! I never used a scooter but crutched my way through two surgeries where I was non-weight-beating for six weeks each time- no fun! I hope all will be well very soon! Best wishes!
Bummer, sorry to hear you're confined to a scooter. I heard it's not as fun as it looks. Did you have a knee replacement? An injury? Either way, I hope you heal quickly and properly! Thanks for continuing your amazing posts!
Nancy, I know that your mobility issues haven't reached that point yet but for future consideration you should be aware of the Alinker. My wife has a condition that affects her balance and this breakthrough mobility device has been great for her. The inventor of the Alinker Bee Alink is a wonderful individual who is making a difference in the world as well. https://www.thealinker.com/
sorry your mobility is limited at the moment, I do understand this frustration and my wish for you is a slow steady recovery an a taste of freedom again soon,
Thank for still writing you emails, I really enjoy reading your portugal life,
Myself and my husband are moving to portugal end March 2023, so excited
Rest well, move easy and often so no stiffness arrives, have a lovely day x Louise
We’re Irish, left Ireland Sept 2022, moved to Mallorca for the last 5 months, Beautiful island, moving onto Portugal now, as it has left a love in our hearts after holidays there, so looking forward to finding our new life there,
We are driving from Mallorca, through Spain into Portugal as we have 3 dogs and it the easiest way to travel with them, so a lovely road trip ahead of us also, bit of craic to be had as we travel,
I hope your recovery goes well and wish you the best. Perhaps I misunderstood when you wrote: “To add insult to injury, my constant reliance on my knee scooter is now causing my artificial knee to scream from time to time. “
Dopesick is an interesting fictionalized treatment of opioid addition and the evils of big Pharma. However I find it interesting how white communities are almost always portrayed as victims and communities of color are always criminalized, the real victims not only in the criminal justice systems, but in the media as well. The real problem is NOT opioids, they are the scapegoat. The real problem is a toxic culture and addiction to short -term solutions to complex problems. Dopesick is weakened by it’s racial bias, as pointed out by many, including NPR.
One of the many differences I have observed here is the use (overuse) of painkillers. I was give hydracodine and Tramadol for 6 weeks following foot surgery in the States. And believe me, I needed them. Here my recovery has been pain free after the first 2 days. No need for narcotics…btw I recommend watching DopeSick which helped me understand the role of pharma in “pain management”.
So sorry your knee is impeding your travels (and butt-kicking of those contractors?!). Heal well, heal quickly.

Another foot surgery on same foot but a bit more complicated. I explained this in prior footnote.

Interesting point…when my knee bothers me I just switch to crutches for a day and it resolves.
May you heal quickly Nanc, and don’t be afraid to take the pain medicine. Martyrs make miserable mates.
