During our visit to Tavira a few weeks back we happened upon this excavation site. While this site is believed to be the 15th century home of the Corte-Real family, João Vaz Corte-Real and his sons Gaspar Corte-Real and Miguel Corte-Real were famous explorers during the Age of Exploration, they uncovered much more.
Specifically, they have discovered an Islamic residence from the 12th century AD, an ox-hide-shaped alter from the 4th century BC, and a Phoenician wall from the 8th Century BC. And to think, I thought the crack in the Liberty Bell was cool.
Next Week: essential driving skills in Portugal, how Portugal leapfrogged the US, and we spent a morning in Spain.
Editor’s Note: Our thoughts are with the residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast on this 16th anniversary of Katrina.
Where exactly is this site in Tavira? I plan to visit the area next month and would like to view this excavation.
Great photos Nancy! I love history! Reading your blog is fun and makes me want to be in Portugal more.
In your blog about can you find it here…my request is can I find Pilates classes in Portugal? I’ve been doing a class daily for an hour in the morning and I’m so much stronger and resilient. This is a practice I want to keep up in my life.
