I was reminded of the art we found in the Jardim do Bonfim when we visit Setúbal when I saw another “substacker’s” piece this week. She and her family recently relocated from San Francisco to Portugal, having purchased a home there from across the pond. I am quite sure she smiled, just as I did when she saw these pieces.
Did you know Carmen Miranda was born in Portugal? I learned that when I was checking the spelling of her name. Anyway, I digress….
The pieces were created by a couple, now artists and gallery owners in Setúbal, that has adopted the name Maria Pó:
We chose the name Maria, because it is more universal and then pó, because it is our essence, what we are made of. Also, because it is the initial of Portugal, my land, Poland, my husband's homeland, and pottery, in English.
Unfortunately, I was not familiar with their work before we visited Setúbal and thus did not have the foresight to locate their gallery.
As you can likely tell, I love public displays of art. They don’t have to make me think…in fact for me, it is better if they don’t. I just want to appreciate their immense creativity. I also admire their bravery. Their willingness to create what they imagine even though others may think it is quirky or odd or question why one would spend their time doing that. Bravo!
Next Week: The people you meet, a store you won’t believe, and when a socialist starts a company.
I had seen these pieces on a YouTube video. They make me smile on the inside and the outside.
Love this! Outside art is fun.
