Thank you Nancy! Will be marching in Oregon! In your notes (number 5) you say that if someone is a Christian they might want to show up as an act of "contrition". I want to assure you that huge numbers of marchers, protesters ARE Christian- lay and clergy- from the liberal congregations and denominations who have been opposed to Trump and the co-opting of Christianity by the religious right for decades.

Not just liberal congregations, fellow Oregonian Andrea. There are still some of us who would at one time be called conservative (small government, personal responsibility) who are biblical Christians, and heart-sick at the numbers of so-called Evangelical Christians who do not seem to have a problem with the hypocritical fusion of MAGA and church. No Kings!

Hi Nancy. Thank you! This is the most grave time for Americans in my lifetime. When I was living in the US, I never shut up about it while my friends just wanted to ignore it and hope it would go away. I finally left for my mental health but my children live there. They are at the top of the heap because they are white men, but my son has a partner and I told him to get the hell out of Texas because if she becomes pregnant, she is the property of the state. The crimes and atrocities committed by Trump and his fascists are too numerous to mention, but I want to scream this every day because it proves Americans don’t give a shit about women. HE IS A RAPIST AND A SEXUAL PREDATOR AND MOST PROBABLY A PEDOPHILE!! And women vote for that scum. The other issue I find horrifying is that there are now at least one or more mass shootings every single day in the country and absolutely nothing is done because Americans fetishise guns to the point that killing people no longer matters as long as they can buy as many weapons as they want. I am totally disgusted by the government of that country. NO KINGS AND NO CRIMINALS

Thank you Nancy, for reminding your readers that they can attend protests in Portugal. In Lisbon, our group is AMPT UP (Americans in Portugal United in Protest). We'll be at Praça do Comércio... 3:00 - 4:00pm. You won't be able to miss our big banner tied on the statue. Be prepared to be loud and AMPT UP for a sane pro-democratic America. Every voice counts!

Leslie Sisman's avatar

Come introduce your self... you won't be able to miss me!

Right on sister! The sophisticated propaganda machine of the government is telling the gullibles that ten-eighteen is a hate march of dangerous America haters. Brave New World. I say to all the American thinkers out there, get out and VOTE. If you don’t it may be the last great American election.

Betsy,

That big lie is coming from our Liar-in-Chief. It is hard for me to understand how so many are being duped by him and the Steve Bannon. Even more, how can any thinking woman buy into it, given the smelly slime of pedophilia and misogyny that prevails in tRump’s administration.

Please forgive me for continuing my rant, now about the issue of immigration, which seems to be the driver of right-wing campaigns. When growing up in Austin my Uncle was foreman of a large ranch in West Texas. Nearly every boy in Texas had a glorified image of cowboys and wanted to be one. One summer I had my chance and worked a month on the ranch. My Uncle was not a nice man, but he did me a wonderful favor. He left me amongst his ranch hands, all of which were from Mexico. They took this skinny young gringo from the city under their wings, and taught me how to rope cattle on horseback. They treated me with the upmost of respect, as their brother. I am sure their boss being my Uncle had something to do with it, but their kindness was genuine.

They were the hardest workers I have ever known. They got up at 5AM, had coffee and fruit, sometimes eggs, ready by 5:30, and started work by 6. We worked until 7-8PM 6 days a week. They did not work on Sundays.

After my one month I was exhausted, but felt stronger in different ways. That experience set a pattern for me that remained my whole life. It included a work ethic, but mainly a deep respect for immigrants.

OK I’m through for the day, I promose!

Hi Joe, what a marvelous life experience that was. Definitely not a rant. Thank you for sharing it. All of life and all of history is personal stories. Just curious, did you learn Spanish along the way?

GnomeJoe's avatar

Un poco! I have forgotten most of it as a lot of words were Mexican slang for, say, “rope”, or “horse”. I did learn cerveza, haha! Also another phrase that is interpreted as “that f*cking thing”, more or less, which was “chingadera”, used when you want someone to hand you something but you can’t remember, or don’t want to say what it is. So one would ask me to pásame esa chingadera. That one stayed with me up to this day, but learned never to use it when in the presence of older Mexican women, who found it quite offensive. Hopefully I have not offended anyone here!

Actually, there were about six of them, one not much older than I was, and he spoke some English. His father, also.

It'll probably be too late for votes to count as a republican billionare recently purchased Dominion--the manufacturer of US voting machines! It is indeed a very dark time in the US.

GnomeJoe's avatar

They are difficult to hack, but not impossible. Yes it is awfully dark in the US!

Dear Nancy, Thank you, thank you, thank you for your courage to speak the truth during times when too many of us are afraid to, for selfish reasons. You are a great voice and I hope your voice carries over the mountains and seas and is heard far and wide.

Thank you for posting about this, Nancy. We will travel to Porto on Saturday for No Kings.

Thank you, Nancy, for continuing to shed light on the mental and moral "contagion" that seems to grip many Americans.

I am glad to read that America is still on your mind. I have continually lauded you and Denise for following your hearts and inventing extraordinary lives for yourselves. Even though it would perhaps have been nice to inhabit my Slippery Slope in the peace of a Democratic administration, I find myself called to a higher task. Fighting against injustice has always felt good to me and wow! So much to fight here in 2025. I also have mentioned to you previously that we needed you both here because of your skills and passion----antifa is right up your alley. But you are there....too bad for America, good for you--however, glad your vibes are directed to us, still at battle after all these years. Yes, Saturday will find Gail and me with our rollators, sitting on the streets with signs, dressed in black. Fired up and ready to go!

If you have not already heard it...take time to listen to Nicole Wallace's interview of Joan Baez. You will love it https://open.spotify.com/episode/230dYWpZWeq4K8PaeqvYnO

Thanks---I had heard about Joan Baez and the interview, but did not listen yet.\

JUst listened----yes, Joan is one of the good ones from our generation who still is ready to go.

Bravo to you! Anyone who unsubscribes because of what you wrote is no loss. The latest travesty is his revision of "Columbus Day". Spain and Portugal have come to grips with the negative aspects of their explorers' legacies yet Trump is making them into emblems of white Christian nationalism. I moved to Portugal on October 2 and although my house here is far from finished, I have no regrets about leaving. Will try to make it next Saturday although can't leave my dogs for too many hours and I'll be driving from Penafiel.

Beth's avatar

Thank you so much for this post!! So many choices for No Dictator day I might go to one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Jeanne's avatar

Bravo! I could not have said it better myself! All my friends in the US are telling me that moving to Portugal was a very smart thing to do. At this point, I totally agree. I do care about the US because of my friends and family. One has to wonder who is going to pick the fruit and vegetables, work on hot roofs, and do all the s..t work that most white people will not do. Another thing about Trump, as you pointed out, is he is destroying the US economy and we are feeling it here because of the devaluation of the dollar. I am sure people in the US are feeling it as well. How in the hell is this regime getting away with all of this? It boggles my mind.

Darci's avatar

Will join in Lisbon No Kings!

Hi Nancy, you wrote January 18th but you meant October right? I'll be there for sure. Thank you for reminding us all what a tyrant he is.

D R's avatar

Yes, that's what I'm seeing too. The event in the article link is OCTOBER 18, not Jan 18. I hope Nancy see this and corrects the original text.

Yes, this weekend

Nancy, well said. My elderly parents, most of my friends and even a few of my relatives who i wouldn't have expected to march well be marching in Kansas city and Washington DC. When I'm not engaged by Trump and what he's doing to the country I never even want to visit again, it breaks my heart. Now that he has designated, Indivisible as a "domestic terrorist" organization, I am afraid to go back because I was in the board of Indivisible KC for 4 years. PROTEST IS PATRIOTIC!

Avery McGinn's avatar

Fear is their goal. Fear will defeat us. Standing up together, shoulder to shoulder, will defeat them.

Silvia Castellanos's avatar

Excellent. Speaking (and writing) truth to power. I will be there on October 18 in Lisboa!

Lori's avatar

Thank you! Don't ever stop doing this... Until or unless a miracle happens that renders it no longer necessary. Sadly, there is no rally in Madeira (at least that we can find), but some friends, both from the US and others, are getting together. In approaching some of the Americans I know here, I was surprised to learn how many remain supporters of the great pumpkin's evil cousin. 🫤🙄

Jon's avatar

I am not surprised. I have been shouting to all on the daily since the first day this monster was elected the first time.

Aside from the psychological mechanism

that creates the cult bias toward despotism there is the defense syndrome that keeps Americans from believing that any of this could happen. And their apathy that they can't overcome.Standing by wringing their hands. These largely white middle class unscathed. And those that are simply ignorant.

When people say "I can't believe" or "I'm

Shocked " it's the telltale sign that they can t accept reality. Trump and his band of deplorables have said publicly what they planned since the beginning. And they published a manifesto that's been available for purchase on Amazon for years.

What is shared less until recently is the grander scheme of the Oligarcy Besos Zuckerberg Musk Benioff Thiel and the architect of evil Yarvin.

Yarvins Dark Enlightenment solution: The complete and total destruction of America’s government and rebuilding the nation as a corporation run by a Silicon Valley start-up-style CEO.

“There’s no difference between a CEO and a dictator,” he said. “If Americans want to change their government, they’re going to have to get over their dictator-phobia.”

A logical and obvious criticism of installing a dictator would be pointing out the horrible atrocities that dictatorships have committed — from Stalin to Hitler to Mao.

Yarvin’s response: “You need to concentrate that power in a single individual and then just hope somehow that this is the right individual, or close to the right individual.”

Basing this draconian billionaire boosting dystopian theory on "hope"!

This is why we must march...NO Kings! No CEO!
