Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point in continental Europe. We first visited there on New Year’s day and found a group of about a dozen hearty Portuguese singing folk songs.
Cabo da Roca is about 16 km (9 miles) northwest of our home in Cascais, in the municipality of Sintra. In the 17th century, a fort located at this point about 150 meters above the sea was an important defensive line guarding Lisbon’s harbor during the Peninsular Wars. While only traces of the fort remain, the lighthouse remains an important navigational point.
Awesome view. And just a bike ride away.
Thanks. Stuck in London with my Portuguese residency. Can’t do scouting trip with my partner to check out the areas I’m interested in relocating to —Cascais among them — due to 5k fines here for traveling. Your glimpses into life there are appreciated.
